Jackson Rotary Club examines Tennessee housing challenges

JACKSON, Tenn. — Rotary members in Jackson recently examined Tennessee’s housing challenges.

The club hosted Brian Straessle, president of the Sycamore Institute, for a lunch program at First United Methodist Church in downtown Jackson. He gave a data-driven breakdown of why home prices have jumped, how population growth and limited supply are squeezing affordability, and what that means for communities like Jackson.

“The demand for housing increased rapidly throughout the 2010’s and really skyrocketed in the 2020’s. Largely because of population growth and migration patterns. On the supply side we were building homes but not enough to keep up with that growing demand,” Straessle said.

Straessle also outlined practical policy options at the local, state, and federal levels, and how housing availability ties directly into economic growth, workforce development, and quality of life in west Tennessee.
