According to Westchester Medical Center Health Network, GLP-1 medications were originally approved to help individuals with Type 2 Diabetes control blood sugar however these medications can also help weight loss.

How GLP-1 medications work is that they slow digestion, lower hunger, and improve blood sugar control. GLP-1 drugs may not be for everyone as taking it can have some side effects.

“Side effects are going to vary from individual to individual, but commonly individuals may experience reduced appetites while on GLP-1s which is why it is important to make sure that the meals that you are consuming and the snacks that you are consuming are as nourishing as possible,” said Melissa Jaeger, registered dietitian and head of nutrition for MyFitnessPal.

Because of the side effects, that means making every bite count and Jaeger says protein and fiber should be at the top of every GLP-1 user’s list.

“When it comes to specific foods and nutrients you should be focusing on, protein is a top priority. Not only for reducing the risk of muscle loss, which is another common side effect of taking GLP-1, but in addition to ensuring that you are staying hydrated and getting adequate amounts of fiber,” said Jaeger.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, foods like fruits and vegetables, fish, chicken, and whole grains are good options for those on GLP-1 but is important to avoid certain foods that have sources of added sugar, refined carbs, processed foods, high-fat foods like pizza, and spicy foods.

However, Jaeger says overall it is about making smarter choices that support what the medication is already doing and building habits that last.

It is also important to note to talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian about GLP-1 medications and building an eating plan.
