Jackson-Madison County school board approves $155 million budget, charter school applications

JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – The Jackson-Madison County School System board approved a proposed $155 million budget for fiscal year 2027 during a special called meeting.

The board voted unanimously to approve the budget. Board members also discussed applications for four charter schools. Those were also approved.

Public information officer for the school district Greg Hammond talked about the district’s change in position on charter schools in Jackson-Madison County.

“So the state has forced our hand. Our board made a decision over the last several years. But again strategically as the superintendent said, with the creation of the LIFT network about a year ago, and the superintendent and his team going before the state board to talk about some of the priority schools, it was the state’s opinion we found out that the LIFT network is something they think could be successful. And so the superintendent is going to build on that,” Hammond said.

The budget proposed by the school board now goes to the Madison County Commission for final approval.
