Milan Elementary students surprise principal with parade

MILAN, Tenn. — Students and staff at Milan Elementary School pulled off a surprise for their principal Thursday morning.

As part of Principals’ Week, fire and police crews rolled up behind the school on Middle Road just after 8:15 a.m., prompting Principal Tammy Rushing to step out and investigate.

Instead of an emergency, she found an escort. Principal Rushing rode in a golf cart driven by Director of Schools Dr. Versie Hamlett, following the emergency vehicles along a path behind the campus.

“I just want everyone to know that Miss Rushing is a wonderful principal,” Hamlett said. “We are so appreciative of all of her hard work. She has students at her heart and everything that she does and she is a servant leader and we’re very appreciative to have her here in Milan Special School District.”

Hundreds of students, teachers and staff were waiting. They cheered, waved and celebrated their principal in a surprise parade in her honor.
