CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn.- A 911 operator in Crockett County who was already suspected of taking tax payer money has been indicted. According to Crockett County deputies, Stacey Michel Smallwood was indicted Monday on a count of felony theft over $60,000, forgery and official misconduct. “Wow that’s a lot of money for Crockett County,” said resident Maryann Pledge. “That’s no chump change.” Officials said everyone who lives in Crockett County and has a land line or cell phone pays the E-911 Board a fee for service. Several residents said they feel cheated. “It just kind of shows that they weren’t paying attention to who was in the office,” said resident Patrick Thomas. Officials said Smallwood was suspended without pay in October after an investigation by the State Comptroller’s office. E-911 Board Director Brian Black told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News in October that funds were missing. He did not elaborate on how much was missing or exactly how the money was allegedly taken. Black did not return phone calls, Monday. “Anybody taking money from everybody else..they need to take control of it,” said resident Sam Rickman. The E-911 board is a private company that is not a part of the Crockett Sheriff’s Department. Deputies said Smallwood is currently free on $25,000 bond.
