NORTH JACKSON, Tenn. — The mother of the 4-month-old police say was dropped during a fist fight at Royal Arms apartments spoke to WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News, Thursday. “My baby is innocent. An innocent bystander in all of this,” the mother, Sherita Phelps, said. Phelps said when she got to baby Isabella’s father’s house on Friday, she had no idea her daughter would be put in danger. “Get money for my baby for diapers and wipes and he usually helps me when I bring her over there and tell him I need something he gives me something for her,” Phelps said. She said she first sent someone to the door to ask if it was OK if she came in. It was when she walked up to the door that Phelps said someone stepped out and began to hit her and her baby. “If you have a problem with me you could be like, at least give me time to give my baby to somebody. If you want to fight me that bad,” Phelps said. “I didn’t drop my baby on her head I didn’t drop her nowhere. She hit my daughter,” Phelps said about the woman. Neighbors said they see Phelps with her children all the time and were shocked when they heard her baby was hurt. “If she knew the circumstances was gonna end up like it was she would have never ever, ever put her child in that situation,” Kimmeca Blakemore, who lives next door, said. “I hope she gets her kids back and I know she loves her kids dearly and I would hate for anything to happen cause I know they love her dearly,” another neighbor, Kay Lofton, said. Phelps says she will maintain her innocence and all she wants for Christmas is to have her 3 children back home with her. “Life without kids isn’t worth living,” Phelps said. She also said her children are staying with a family member for now. Phelps said baby Isabella had 2 skull fractures around her eye, but shouldn’t have any long term damage. She also says she was told by a nurse her daughter’s injuries are not as a result of being dropped. No criminal charges have been filed in this case.
