Obion County Flooding Threatens Christmas Plans

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — After the heavy rains Saturday night, officials closed flood gates all over the county, leaving many questioning their Christmas plans. A Union City woman is now worried about her family’s Christmas plans after a road leading to her house is flooded. “It’s just the roads have been flooded. The field in the back of our house looks like a little lake right now,” Rhonda Moore, who lives right beside the flood gate, said. Moore said this happens at lease once a year, when heavy rain comes down, the ground and eventually the roads, fill up with water. “I don’t think there is a pond that I know of around here.. Unless it’s way far over in that direction,” Moore said. Moore said her worst fear is being stuck in case of an emergency. “We couldn’t get out or they couldn’t get in to us. We don’t own a boat,” she said. But at this time of year, her fear is not being able to spend Christmas with her family. “It’s sort of scary,” Moore said. “Christmas is one time a year, one special time, and we want to spend it with our family.” She says officials put the flood gates up about a year and a half ago, because she and her husband were having to fish cars and people out of the water when drivers didn’t realize how deep the water gets. The water has never reached their house and Moore says every time it floods she just hopes for the best. “Just pray the water drains down and goes away and no more comes before this is gone,” Moore said. Moore says she hopes officials dig deeper ditches and come up with a better solution to cut down on flooding. Officials say at least nine roads in Obion County are closed as a result of the flooding.
