City Workers Brave Cold Temperatures

JACKSON, Tenn.– Dangerously cold temperatures could not keep Jackson city employees indoors on Monday. “We know we got to come to work,” said Leon Chandler, a worker with the Jackson Health and Sanitation Department. “We know we can’t sit around the shop all day, so we just got to get out here and get it.” Chandler and his crew picked up piles of debris on Monday. “This [is] the first day it’s been this cold that I can remember since back in the 60s,” he said. Workers piled on an extra layer of clothing. “I have on coveralls and underwear and a couple layers of socks and boots,” said Chandler. Employees with the Jackson Street Department also work in the cold. Crews salt slick spots all over the city. “This type of weather, we gotta get out and do something,” said Arthur Chism, a supervisor with the Jackson Street Department. Workers try to adjust to single digit temperatures. “Get out and stay busy,” said Chism. “Work, get back in the truck til our next job site, and stay busy.” Chandler does not seem to mind the cold. “I enjoy my job,” he said. “I guess that’s one thing that makes it so easy. If you enjoy what you’re doing, you don’t mind getting out here and doing it.” Workers get to warm up in the truck.
