WEST JACKSON — The first candidate in the race for the 26th District picked up papers and says he’ll run not as an independent, but as a republican, Monday. Edward Martindale picked up a candidate nominating petition at the election commission, Monday morning. Martindale will also now need to get 25 registered voters to sign it before he can file as a candidate. Martindale came in 3rd in a six man race for the seat in August 2012 when he lost to Nathan Pride. “The last time we had 5 candidates running. This time I don’t believe they’ll be as many candidates running because with the Republican primary there’ll only be one Republican. If anybody runs in the Democratic primary, they’ll be one Democrat and…of course anybody that runs as an independent,” Edward Martindale said, candidate for judge. Judge Pride has also picked up a petition. He released a statement to WBBJ today that said the following: “I welcome the challenge and only ask that the people of the 26th District, vote for the candidate who has the most experience, the best qualifications, a truly varied background, one who would be fair, impartial and non-political. And I believe they will find that candidate to be Nathan Pride.” The deadline to file for the August election is February 20th. Primaries will be held May 6, with election day set for August 7.
