JACKSON, Tenn.- It might surprise you to know that prescription drug contamination is often detected in in local water supplies. The reason is 90 percent of Americans improperly dispose of unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medication. Tuesday, Jackson City councilman Ernest Brooks unveiled a new way to properly dispose of old medicine as part of his Jackson Pharmaceutical Disposal initiative. It includes the placement of a permanent collection bin set up in the lobby of the Jackson Police Department of Institute Street. “The bin is here for non-environmental protection measure and secondly, it will help keep these drugs off the streets of Jackson,” said Jackson City councilman Ernest Brooks. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, which helped establish the program for permanent drug drop-off bins, requires a monthly report on the total number of pounds collected. The police department lobby is open 24-hours a day.
