Vandals Damage Mailboxes in Gibson County

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Investigators search for vandals targeting mailboxes in Gibson County. Authorities say someone damaged more than a dozen mailboxes on Pleasant Hill Road. “It looked like a truck ran over it,” said Lawrence Graves, a victim. “It was smashed flat almost.” Graves noticed someone damaged his mailbox Monday morning. “They really went out of their way,” Graves said. “They really must have been bored, needed something to do really bad.” Gibson County investigators say vandals destroyed 20 boxes on Pleasant Hill Road. Humboldt Police also took two reports. “Well, it’s a nuisance,” said Eddie Harris, a victim. The suspects knocked Harris‘ mailbox off its pole. “I suspect it’s just some kids having a little fun at night,” he said. “You know they’re probably riding along with a baseball bat knocking it over.” Graves estimates it could cost between $50 and $100 to replace his mailbox. He put up a temporary box in the meantime. “It’s ugly, but it’ll at least it’ll catch the mail for a few days,” said Graves. Federal law makes it a crime to vandalize mailboxes. Violators can be fined up to $250,000 or get up to three years of jail time for each act. If you have any information about the mailbox vandalism, contact the Humboldt Police Department or the Gibson County Sheriff‘s Office.
