College Program to Offer Student Jobs at $12 an Hour

JACKSON, Tenn. — A select group of West Tennessee students will have an extra competitive edge leading to graduation, and a chance to earn money while they earn their degrees. It’s all thanks to Jackson State Community College’s Advanced Maintenance Technician program. Chosen applicants will be placed into science and technology jobs at 15 locations in Jackson. “I think I am going to [do the program], it would be foolish not to, I mean you know,” Lorenzo Cunningham, a graduating high school senior said. Students who enroll in the program get the opportunity to earn $12 an hour, an associates degree and the possibility of graduating from college debt free. “There’s always a plan B, you should always have a plan B as far as education and financial stability,” Cunningham said. Recruiters with JSCC went to Jackson Central Merry on Tuesday to encourage students to apply. Once the application process is done, Cathi Roberts says only the top 20 science, technology, engineering or mathematics students, also known as STEM students, will make it into the program. “It’ll be the cream of the crop, we’re looking for STEM students and those who really want a good future, [who] want a stable career,” Roberts said. The deadline to apply is April 1st.
