DNA From Beer Can Helps Solve Cold Case Burglary

ENVILLE, Tenn. – A beer can found at a crime scene lands a West Tennessee man in jail a year after deputies said he burglarized an Enville home. “It was relieving, very exciting to know that even this far out they could actually find the guy and catch him,” homeowner Dena Anderson said. In January of last year, Anderson came home to find thousands of dollars in property stolen. “Mainly electronics from the house (were stolen), but the greatest loss was in the garage area where they took most of the farm equipment,” Anderson said. Anderson’s livestock and farming business took a hit, but she recovered and replaced everything. A year later, the burglary was an afterthought until that beer can changed everything. Deputies found a Bud Light can at a different burglary scene in McNairy County, just miles from Anderson’s home in Chester County. The DNA from that can led investigators to Joseph Simpson. “The only thing we had was that beer can, and that has been the only reason this case was solved was because of DNA on that beer can,” Investigator Robert Hitchborn with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department said.
