Fire Damages West Jackson Home

WEST JACKSON, Tenn.–Fire damaged a home on Burkett Street in west Jackson early Wednesday morning. “When I opened the front door I was greeted by billowing smoke and then I panicked,” Bill Steppe said, the homeowner. Steppe came home, saw the fire, then rushed inside to put it out. “I couldn’t get to the fire extinguisher because the heat was too intense,” Steppe said. Firefighters say Steppe rushed to a neighbor‘s house for help. “My heart is in pieces which no glue can put back together, except prayers,” Steppe said. It took crews several minutes to get the flames under control. Firefighters say it started in the kitchen. “There’s a lot of smoke and water and some fire damage,” Battalion Chief Johnny Brantley said, with the Jackson Fire Department. Steppe says his pet cat died in the fire. The flames damaged his house, but not his faith. “As the Lord says you know, He never promised us a smooth road,” said Steppe. “We gotta negotiate the bumps.” Steppe plans to meet with his insurance adjuster and rebuild. “My biggest prayer is to see if we can reconstruct this house and bring it back to pristine condition,” Steppe said. No one was hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
