Man released from death row charged in shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say a man who served 15 years in prison, including time on death row, in the killing of a Memphis police officer has been charged with shooting a girl.
According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1idH8WT), police say 39-year-old Timothy McKinney was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder after he fired shots in a convenience store Jan. 4. Police say he struck a 14-year-old girl in the leg.
McKinney was convicted in the 1997 murder of Memphis Police Officer Don Williams.
The conviction was overturned in 2010 when a state appeals court ruled McKinney’s original attorneys did not properly investigate or try the case.
Two retrials ended in hung juries before he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to time served in a settlement last year.
