Family and Friends Mourn Loss of 17-Year-Old Fire Victim

EAST JACKSON, Tenn. — Students at Jackson Central-Merry are saddened about the loss of their classmate. Several JCM students said Tyrone Sterling, who was killed in a fire Saturday morning, was a great friend and that the football team will miss more than a team player. “The football team will take it hard because everybody counts him as a brother. I think everyone at school will feel the same,” Deasia Curry, a classmate and cousin, said. Family and friends remember the amazing person they said Tyrone Sterling was. “He had a good vibe about him. He was like a magnet. He attracted a lot of people to him,” Zanetra Pearson, a lifelong friend, said. They said they also remember how he played football. “He was good, he was excellent. All he used to talk about was JCM,” Nyia Sterling, his cousin, said. “His drive, competitive. He always tried to push himself hard even though he had asthma. He still kept saying I’m gonna be the best,” Jerry McCorr said. By the best, his aunt said he meant going pro. “He said, ‘Auntie, I get tired of seeing you and my mom struggle. When I go pro, I’m gonna buy you a house and you’ll have it made,'” Michelle Sterling said. His family said his caring nature is what people will remember most about him. “When you’re upset, he makes you laugh. You can’t be mad at him long,” Nyia Sterling said. His aunt said if she could say one more thing to Tyrone she would say: “Job well done. He was the best nephew God could’ve ever blessed into my life,” Michelle Sterling said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
