SELMER, Tenn. – Many parents in McNairy County say they were upset when they learned McNairy County School Board members were discussing rezoning. Frank Lacey, the board chairman, said the issue came up at last month’s meeting, when one board member suggested moving forward with a school building project that had been put on the back-burner. “And in doing so, (he suggested we) look at the options of zoning the school and requiring students go in their zone and to potentially look at just building one school,” Lacey said. Under the current rules, parents can choose any school in the county for their children. Many parents filled the local courthouse for Tuesday night’s meeting, looking for further explanation about what was being considered and why. “Leave us the options, don’t take our options away from us that we’ve had,” parent Jimbo Dickerson said. “Let us be able to decide where we want our children to go.” Superintendent John Prince and the school board members opted to not rush into a quick decision. “Working with him (Prince), I’ve said let’s set aside some work sessions, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Lacey said. “We’re going to gather all the data, all the facts, and move forward.” “It let’s me know as a parent that they are listening to what we want, and they are actually looking out for the best interest of the county,” Dickerson said. Lacey said the first work session will be Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.
