Tips to protect yourself when coming across a vicious dog

JACKSON, Tenn. — With some recent dog attacks in the area, here’s something to think about — each year, dogs in the U.S. cause about 4.7 million bites, according to the American Humane Association. Local expert, Kathleen Honeycutt with the Jackson Health and Sanitation department, says if you see a dog that doesn’t look so friendly, it’s best to stay away from it. “Do not approach them,” Kathleen Honeycutt said. “You don’t know what are going to do and the best thing to do is call for professional help.” Ninety-two percent of fatal dog attacks involve male dogs, 94 percent of which are not neutered. About two-thirds of bites occur on or near the victim’s property, and most victims know the dog.
