JACKSON, Tenn. – Just yards from newly installed surveillance cameras, another man falls victim to gun violence. Residents in Lincoln Courts housing complex say they still fear violence despite the 24 hour presence of Jackson police. One resident, Heather Smith, said she will only bring her 4-month-old daughter outside to take her to the car. “Every time you come outside there’s fights or somebody shooting so I don’t come out that often. I just come out to smoke and that’s it,” Smith said. Smith heard gunfire just across the street on Sunday night. “I was paralyzed with fear. All I heard was four gunshots. It was super quiet before it happened, so I don’t know what happened because I didn’t hear any arguing, I just heard four shots and somebody was down,” she said. Jackson police said around 11 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in front of the 128 building. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Smith hoped Jackson Police cameras that now tower over her neighborhood, would stop this kind of violence. “If that’s not going to stop them, I don’t know what will. I don’t think there’s anything. People are so fearless these days,” Smith said. We asked Jackson Police if one of the cameras, which sits about 75 yards from the Sunday night shooting, captured video of the crime. Captain Tyreece Miller released this statement: “That’s a detail in an ongoing investigation that we’re declining to comment on at this time.” Smith said right now she believes criminals are not afraid of these crime cameras but if police make an arrest in this shooting she thinks criminals will start to think before they act. “I hope that it stops some of the crime but it just seems like so far it hasn’t. People are killing people for no reason,” Smith said. Jackson police said they do have a person of interest in this shooting but they are not releasing a name at this time. The gunshot victim is in stable condition at a local hospital.
