Alcohol clause in Gibson Co. drug policy

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn.-With the unanimous vote by the Gibson County commissioners, each of the county’s 200-plus workers can now be randomly tested for drugs and alcohol. “That’s the case with most places or a lot of places of employment. That’s a sign of the times,” said Gibson County resident, Fred Culp. Unlike neighboring counties, the Gibson County policy allows employees to have some alcohol in their system. Staff can have up to a .04 blood alcohol content without issue. Those with CDLs test positive at .02. Something one Jackson attorney said could be to keep employees from being punished for some off duty decisions. “It would seem that would allow for someone to come into work that might have had a drink or two the night before that might not have completely metabolized out of their system,” said Jackson attorney, Mike Weinman. Culp said he does not see a problem with the policy’s flexibility,” As time passes and they have experience with it they might want to tighten up on it more.” Gibson County Mayor Tom Witherspoon said if the commissioners decide to go with a zero tolerance policy he will support that decision.
