NEAR BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. – The THP confirms a fourth person has died when at least four vehicle collided on Interstate 40 in Haywood County. Originally troopers believed only two people had died in the crash. The death toll was raised to three shortly after the wreck and has now climbed to four. According to the THP, two of the victims were in one of the semi-trucks. The other victims were in a passenger vehicle. Troopers said the wreck involved two commercial vehicles and at least two passenger vehicles. It happened around 3:30 p.m. near mile marker 64 in the westbound lanes. Westbound traffic is now open on one lane and both lanes on the eastbound side are now open. Some witnesses say they saw the vehicles collide. “An 18-wheeler just passed by me like he was going in excess of between 65 to 70. He was gone. He was driving so fast, he blew my doors off. He hit a car sitting still in the right lane. Once he hit that car it blew up,” Jennifer Gaston, who was directly behind the cars involved in the accident, said, “the trailer went in all kinds of directions. The hood came up, you could see the motor come out and then boom, the flames went up.” Witnesses also say the smoke from the fiery crash could be seen from miles away. “I was coming up the hill and you could see about 50 feet on top. It was a big, big one,” Marcelo Guerrero said. THP says the names of the victims will not be released until the families of those involved have been notified.
