WEST JACKSON—Trina Leasure has been a 5th grade math, science, and social studies teacher for 8 years at Andrew Jackson Elementary School in West Jackson. “My favorite part about teaching is seeing my students faces when they walk through the door. They always greet me with a smile no matter what kind of morning I’m having. They always brighten my day.” Leasure said. The homegrown Lane College graduate says that she got into the field of education thanks to her wonderful teachers she had in the college classroom. “This is actually something that came naturally. I grew to develop a mentor through my years of teaching and her name was “Helen Owens.” Actually she was an instructor at the time at Lane College during my matriculation there.” Leasure said. Leasure loves teaching her 5th graders but says their can be challenges since it can be hard to engage them when it comes to certain subjects. “When they get older sometimes the frilly, frilly stuff is not something their really interested in. I have to be really creative to engage their minds cause they actually are in the transition stage between elementary and middle school.” Leasure said. Leasure enjoys seeing her students excel and be creative within the classroom. She also says this is why she never gave up on the position and feels that she has become a better educator because of it. “One quote that I remember having at Lane College , you still see it today is the power for potential. They have the power to and the potential to go as high as the sky.” Leasure said. Leasure will be eligible for the state-wide Tennessee Education Lottery “Educator of the Month” award.
