Victims of impaired driving crashes remembered
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Law enforcement and state officials are taking time to remember victims of impaired driving crashes in Tennessee.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville.
Officials say Tennessee lost an estimated 349 lives in impaired driving crashes last year.
Driving while impaired can refer to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both.
According to the Washington, D.C.-based Governors Highway Safety Association, impaired driving is one of America’s most often committed and deadliest crimes. In 2010, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired traffic crashes.
Those participating in Wednesday’s event include the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office, the Transportation Department, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security and representatives from the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police and the Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association.
