School board accepts funding settlement from city of Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Shelby County’s school board has accepted a settlement with the city of Memphis that ends a dispute about funding.

According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/18uAagf ), the school board voted Tuesday to accept a deal that resolves a conflict over school funding dating back to 2008.

The settlement is worth $41 million, including services of 25 Memphis police officers in the schools through the end of the 2015-16 school year. The city will make the first payment of $8 million this month and make subsequent annual payments of $1.3 million through 2030.

City Council members in 2008 voted to approve an annual budget that withheld tens of millions of dollars in funding from the then-Memphis City Schools district. Memphis City Schools and Shelby County schools have since merged.
