Minister bemoans overreach of federal government

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A minister and patriotic activist who prayed at the beginning of Tuesday’s Senate session bemoaned what she considered federal overreach from Washington.

The prayer comes a day after Republican Gov. Bill Haslam convened a special session to discuss his plan to extend health coverage to 280,000 low-income Tennesseans. Many fellow Republicans in the Legislature are dubious about the plan because it relies on funds available under President Barack Obama’s health care law.

June Griffin with the American Bible Protestant Church, an independent body of Bible believers, asked for prayer requests before she prayed Tuesday. One legislator asked that she pray for lawmakers as they decide whether to approve the governor’s proposal.

Griffin told The Associated Press after the session that she opposes what she considers forced insurance.
