Memphis police fatally shoot suspect; officer wounded

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Memphis police say an officer was shot in the arm by another policeman in a shooting that left a suspect dead.

According to the police department, officers went to a home Tuesday to arrest 48-year-old Anthony Bess on an aggravated assault warrant.

Police said Bess had his hands behind his back when officers came in contact with him inside the house. Officers repeatedly ordered Bess to show his hands, but he refused. Police said Bess then pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers.

Police said an officer fired a shot that hit Bess. Moments later, an officer was shot in the arm by a fellow officer.

Bess died at a hospital. Police said the wounded officer was taken to a hospital in non-critical condition.

Police are still investigating.
