Director of Nashville schools urges cooperation with state
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The director of Metro Nashville Public Schools is urging board members to cooperate with state officials to resolve a dispute over education funding.
The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1Ad8h3a) reports Director Jesse Register sent an email on Monday to the school board, metro Council and Gov. Bill Haslam saying he hopes opening a line of communication with the Haslam administration, including new Education Commissioner Candice McQueen, would result in more Basic Education Program funding.
The letter comes on the heels of 28 Metro council members signing a letter asking the board to join other districts “in challenging the state of Tennessee’s failure to adequately fund” the program.
The Shelby County school board has already voted to hire an attorney to prepare a complaint against the state.
