Smokies looking for roving volunteers to help visitors
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) – Roving volunteers are needed to help visitors to the Oconaluftee (oh-kon-ah-LUHF’-tee) River Trail and other areas in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for part of the year.
The park says volunteers usually work one four-hour shift per week and are needed from mid-April through mid-November.
Volunteers would also rove the Mountain Farm Museum and the fields along Newfound Gap Road around the Oconaluftee Visitor Center near Cherokee, North Carolina.
Roving volunteers provide information to visitors regarding park regulations to protect wildlife, as well as information about cultural and natural resources. When elk are present, volunteers also help rangers with traffic management and provide visitors with information on safely viewing elk.
A required training session will be April 1. To register or for more information, contact Kathleen Stuart at (828) 497-1914.
