Crockett County’s football team has a longer preseason than most. The Cavaliers don’t play until Week 2 against Westview. “We don’t have the opportunity to open up that first week like everybody else,” head coach Kevin Ward said. “It gives us like a five-week preseason. We won’t be practicing two-a-days like everybody else.” It’s all about easing into things in Alamo. Ward doesn’t want to burn out his kids. “We’ll work on our special teams and get all that stuff squared away our first week,” Ward said. The Cavaliers offense will have a different flow to it. The school lost their star running back Johnny Jones. Jones broke the school rushing record and a few TSSAA records. “One of those things you gotta make sure you’re smart in how you set up your offense and understand the people that we got,” Ward said. “Know that we won’t have a Johnny Jones we can hand it off to 25 times a game.” The Cavaliers plan to run more a spread style offense this season. It’s going to be a mix of running and passing from their quarterback. “Got a quarterback that runs pretty well. We’ll use him kind of like a tailback.”
