JACKSON, Tenn. — Tennessee‘s tax-free holiday weekend kicks off Friday, but some students have already gone back to school. Parent Ashanta Twiddy said she could not wait because her oldest needed supplies before Friday. “I’m thinking it should be at least a week or two before school starts, be better for the parents,” Twiddy said. State Sen. Ed Jackson said state lawmakers designated the first full weekend in August as tax free. “It’s unfortunate that school’s already started because they do have to have some things, so hopefully something from last year will work,” he said. Jackson said the legislature has not discussed moving the tax-free holiday but said they possibly could. “School has started earlier and is starting earlier now, so that might be something that we need to look into,” he said. Some shoppers said they do not plan to get out and fight the crowds this weekend. “I think if you wait until then you’re not going to find what you need,” Stella Crocker, a grandparent, said. Friday through Sunday, parents can save about 10 percent on everything from school supplies to clothes and electronics. “It’s quite a bit of savings, especially if your child [is] in an upper size,” Twiddy said. The tax-free holiday weekend kicks off at 12:01 a.m. Friday and runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
