JACKSON, Tenn. — Some Jackson residents are becoming irritated about a buildup of trash on residential streets.
Many are wondering why their discarded garbage — ranging from batteries to furniture — hasn’t been picked up. Some residents said it’s been several weeks since the last truck stopped on their street.
“I put it out here last Thursday, and the city of Jackson has passed through here two or three times, passed it by and won’t even pick it up,” Jackson resident Kenneth Amos said. Amos said he bought new living room furniture and hauled the old to the curb “’cause we have nowhere else to put it.”
Two of the seven debris pick-up trucks are out of service, according to city officials. Jackson City Councilman Johnny Dodd said crews are trying to do what they can to correct the situation.
“We’ve got to work together to solve this issue in our community,” Dodd said. He said the issue may not all be Jackson’s fault and that contracting crews haven’t been picking up their rubble either.
He tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News he even had to add a “no-dumping” sign to one street in his district. “Signs have been put up around the city prohibiting dumping but have been disregarded,” he said. “I don’t like to go by and see a pile that’s been there for over a month and then you got grass growing around it,” he said. “Then we’re telling you to clean your pile and then we’re not doing our job, so it’s not fair to the homeowners.”
According to the city, they are working to get the fleet in full force. If you have trash or debris that needs to be picked up, you can report it to the city hotline at 731-425-CITY.
