Theft, vandalism totaling nearly $20K reported at cemetery
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – East Tennessee law enforcement officials are investigating theft and vandalism at a cemetery that dates to 1792.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1hgk2TG ) said the Knox County sheriff’s office is investigating the case, which involves about $19,240 in property at Pleasant Forest Cemetery in Farragut.
Families reported graves had been damaged and sentimental items stolen.
Caretaker Michael Karnitz said eight to 10 families reported thefts to him. Items taken included small statues, urns and solar lights.
The newspaper said the cemetery is the second oldest in Knox County and is home to the graves of former Gov. Archibald Roane and several Revolutionary War soldiers.
