Landfill Permit Fight Continues
The conflict over the Denmark landfill in Madison County continues, as the landfill’s owner has been approved for a permit by the state’s solid waste committee. Although the Solid Waste Region Board denied A-1 Landfill owner, Bill McMillan’s request for a permit in 2011, he went to the state board earlier this month asking them to override that decision, which they did. In a meeting Tuesday, however, the Madison County Commission voted to encourage the Solid Waste Region board to appeal the state’s decision. While McMillan told 7 Eyewitness News he is frustrated with the county, Denmark community supporters think it was the state that was in the wrong. “They overlooked the fact that this plan, this solid waste plan. Madison County has one. They did not even consider that, nor did they have an opportunity to address the why’s. Why it was not needed. We already have a class three landfill,” said Jackson-Madison County NAACP President, Harrell Carter. The board also voted to encourage the solid waste board not to issue McMillan’s permit until the appeal is heard by the state.
