Only Two Qualifying Petitions for Four School Board Races

There are just three weeks for candidates to file the paperwork to run for circuit court judge and school board in Jackson-Madison County and when it comes to the school board there is surprisingly little interest. There are four seats up for re-election on the nine-person board. But so far, only one of the incumbents, Billy Keeton, who holds up the District 2 position has picked up a petition to run again. The others, Becky Gordon, Bill Baxter and Carol Carter-Estes have not. However, one potential candidate has picked up a petition for Bill Baxter’s seat. “Usually school board races are pretty active. It’s just unusual to not have more activity that we’re seeing by this time,” said Kim Buckley, administrator of the Madison County Election Commission. The race for the Circuit Court Judge position vacated by Roger Page is receiving a lot of interest. So far, six people have picked up petitions to run in the judge’s seat that represents Madison, Henderson and Chester counties. The state primary and general election election is scheduled for August 2.
