The Alert FM system warns people in Chester County if a severe thunderstorm or a tornado is on the way. “It is very important to give people time enough to seek shelter. Sirens are for those people who are outside it warns them to get inside, seek shelter. Sirens are not for people who are inside the house,” said Emergency Director Johnny Farris. The Alert FM system has been installed in all of the Chester County schools, the court house and many office buildings. If severe weather is headed to Henderson a text will go out. “It works good here in the county. It’s loud and it wakes everybody up if they are sleeping in the office which they are not supposed to be, but it works good, ” said Chester County Mayor Dwain Seaton. A limited number of free Alert FM radios will be handed out to Chester County residents in the lobby of the Gardner Center Building at Freed-Hardeman University, Friday from 4pm to 6pm “We are going to set up and give away radios to those that are unable to afford to buy those radios it should be those people on fixed income and elderly and things like that,” said Farris. Emergency leaders said Alert FM is unique compared to other notification systems because it delivers messages using the data sub carrier of local FM radio transmission towers. “There is a technical carrier on every radio station in the country and what this is there is a little band within there that can carry a text message,” Farris said.
