The Jackson-Madison County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution handed out their community service award. The recipients are Carl and Alice Kirkland. The couple were praised for their generosity, volunteerism and humanitarian endeavors that span several organizations in West Tennessee such as the Jackson-Madison Humane Society, the Jackson Symphony and their recent gift of $5 million to the West Tennessee Health Care Foundation for the Alice and Carl Kirkland Cancer Center. “We hope that people remember that we cared about people in Jackson, said Carl Kirkland, Community Service Award winner. “We hope that some of the efforts that we made will benefit someone and i guess that’s what we’d like to be remembered for.” Also handed out Thursday at the chapter’s annual Patriotic Tea were five good citizen awards. The recipients are area high schoolers who wrote outstanding patriotic essays.
