West Carroll HS Hosts Open House for New Greenhouse
Students at West Carroll High School welcomed the community to an open house for their greenhouse, Friday. About 150 students utilize the facility which is new this school year. They grow vegetables, herbs and flowering plants. Many of their projects during the year were for sale. School leaders said the idea for the greenhouse started from a desire to grow vegetables and spices not normally found in Tennessee. Thanks to the greenhouse, teachers said they have been able to teach their students a lot of life lessons. In their attempts to make things grow, sometimes they don’t grow and they have to reason and figure out why, what they did, problem solving and critical thinking are the main things that we’re wanting to encourage students to do,” said Linda Black, Career and Technical Education Director and Culinary Arts teacher. The greenhouse was built with funds from the Carl Perkins reserve fund. The area around it includes an outdoor kitchen and wood-fired pizza oven..
