Fighting crime and gangs in West Tennessee was the focus of a special gathering at the University of Memphis, Lambuth Campus, Friday. More than a hundred people from around the area, including law enforcement officers, gathered for the free luncheon and forum. The speaker talked about what is known as the “Memphis Model.” It is the crime intervention strategies used in the Bluff City that have been implemented in cities like Jackson with success. “Communities need to come together as partners to address these problems,” said Dr. Richard Janikowski of the University of Memphis. “They are not solely law enforcement problems.” The forum was hosted by the Papasan Public Policy Institute at the University of Memphis, the University of Memphis Center for Community Criminology and Research, and its Center for Community Building and Neighborhood Action.
