MARTIN, Tenn. – A landmark at the University of Tennessee at Martin has come down. The campus communications tower was demolished, Thursday. It was built in 1966 and cost $1 million. Robin Wood worked at the tower. He said, “This tower was the center point. The main transmitter was here and operated on a 2.1 frequency microwave which was real new technology for the period.” The tower was designed so that college courses such as physics, science and math could be taught and beamed to classrooms all over Northwest Tennessee. The old tower has been replaced by a new smaller tower. It has improved features including new technology and the ability to keep working in emergencies and power outages. With the temperature close to 100 degrees, Mark Lowery scaled the 320 foot tower. He admits sometimes he does get a little scared up there, but it’s just part of the job. Mark Lowery said, “It takes a special breed if everybody done it we wouldn’t have a job probably.” The new tower was completed in 2011.
