Haywood Co. Criminal Justice Complex Opens
The new Haywood County Criminal Justice Complex in Brownsville officially opened its doors, Friday. The county hosted a ribbon cutting and open house, allowing state representatives and those who live in the area to see the $14 million complex for themselves. The county remodeled the old Walmart building to include, not only a new larger and more secure jail, but courtrooms, officers and tornado shelter. Leaders said the project came in little more than $1 million under budget. “The economy has been in a recession and we bid everything at the right time when people were looking for work, so we got good prices on all of our subcontractors,” said Mayor Franklin Smith of Haywood County. “So everything worked out and its really wonderful to come in under budget.” Leaders said, those extra funds will go toward renovations at Haywood County High School, which include a new central heat and air system.
