Elias Strikes Out Eight, but Generals Fall Again to Stars

(July 29, 2013) – Huntsville took care of business for the second straight night, as the Stars (17-19) notched a 5-3 victory over the Jackson Generals (15-19). The loss was the fourth straight for Jackson. The Stars did not allow a run past the third inning, working their way out of several trouble spots. They are now 6-4 on the season against the Generals. The Stars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard Monday night finding two runs the same way they did on Sunday night. Jason Rogers extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a repeat performance, a two-run long ball over the left field fence. Rogers has now clobbered three home runs in the last two games and seven during his current hitting streak. The 2-0 score stood still until the third inning. Jackson sent seven batters to the dish and it resulted in three runs. The bases found themselves loaded and Ji-Man Choi (1-3, 3B, 3 RBI, BB) dug in. Choi hammered a ball to the right center field gap and ended up with his third triple of the season, clearing the bases and giving the Generals a 3-2 lead. The Generals were on a three-game slide coming into the game and they turned to Roenis Elias (L, 6-9, 3.23) to settle the ship. Elias was coming off a season-high 10 strikeouts against Chattanooga, and the left-hander did his best to repeat it tonight. The Cuban-native finished with eight punch outs, including striking out the side in the fifth, all via the curveball. Elias left after 5.1 innings of work, allowing only two hits and two earned runs. He did walk three and gave up a home run with his season-high 105 pitches. Huntsville forced Elias out of the game in the sixth and then grabbed three runs in the frame. All nine hitters got a plate appearance in the three-run inning, including a two-RBI single by former West Tenn Diamond Jaxx player, Eric Patterson. Joe Dunigan (1-2, BB) made his 2013 Double-A debut after getting hit in the jaw by a pitch in April playing for Triple-A Tacoma. Dunigan had one of only five Generals‘ hits. Jackson left the bases loaded twice on Sunday night and did it again in the sixth inning on Monday. The bags were packed with no outs, but the bottom of the lineup could not come through with any runs. Jackson was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the night and left a total of six runners on base. With the win the Stars are now 40-0 when leading after seven innings. They improved their record to 14-10 in July after going 8-19 in the month of June. The middle game of the series will begin at 7:05 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday night. Jackson will have Anthony Fernandez (6-5, 4.60) start tomorrow‘s game. Huntsville has selected Taylor Jungman (9-6, 3.77) to counter the left-hander
