Former Powell-Clinch district chief sentenced

CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) – A former utility district chief who pleaded guilty to stealing from the district has been sentenced to 10 days in jail in a plea agreement.

However, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel ( ), Del Ray Roberts will also be on supervised probation for 10 years, must perform 40 hours of community service in each of those years and must put $10,000 into a fund to help poor people pay their utility bills.

Roberts, who is 53, was formerly the president and general manager of the Powell-Clinch Utility District. He was charged with stealing nearly $94,000 from his employer and using the money for a family cruise, dental care and college tuition, among other expenses.

A prosecutor said Roberts has repaid the utility, which is based in Lake City.
