Fort Loudon Lake Association to disband
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – An environmental group that worked at improving the health of the Tennessee River is closing up shop at the end of the month.
Organizers with the Fort Loudon Lake Association told the Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1DTTSMH ) a lack of funding is forcing the shutdown.
In seven years, the organization has removed 82 tons of trash, 20,000 logs and some 4,000 other large objects – including cows – from the river.
The section of the river of that runs through Knoxville is known as Fort Loudoun Lake and has been kept clean in part by the organization’s roughly 70 volunteer clean up days through the year.
The nonprofit had been funded through grants and government and corporate funding, much of which has dried up since the economic crisis.
