Former jailer charged with stealing from inmate

LOUDON, Tenn. (AP) – A former Loudon County Jail administrator is accused of stealing nearly $14,000 from an inmate’s commissary fund.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the agency was asked to step in after a state Comptroller’s audit determined money was missing.

Ruthie Teresa Smith was the person responsible for depositing money into the account, from which almost $14,000 had gone missing between Nov. 27, 2013, and Aug. 17, 2014.

Smith resigned in August. She was indicted on Wednesday on charges of theft over $10,000 and official misconduct. The 40-year-old turned herself in at the Loudon County Jail that same day and was released after posting a $2,000 bond.

No number for Smith was listed in the phone directory.
