Leflore supervisors approve private prison deal
GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) – Leflore County is agreeing to sell additional land outside the current Delta Correctional Facility’s fences to help a private prison operator pursue a contract to house federal inmates there.
Management and Training Corp. in Centerville, Utah, is bidding on Federal Bureau of Prisons contract. It would need to expand the currently shuttered facility to house 1,400 to 1,600 federal inmates.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (http://bit.ly/1JIoJlS) Delta Correctional was previously run by private prison operator Corrections Corporation of America of Nashville, Tennessee. It closed in January 2012. A portion of it continues to be used as the Leflore County Jail.
Federal law prohibits housing federal inmates with state or local inmates. That means MTC would be required to build a new jail for the county if the company gets the contract
