JACKSON, Tenn. — Residents on Monday said happy birthday to the Volunteer State as Tennessee turned 219 years old. What is now Tennessee was originally part of North Carolina and later was part of the Southwest Territory before being admitted to the union on June 1, 1796. Our state takes credit for starting the careers of many musical greats, including Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, and boasts some of the south’s best attractions such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the Grand Ole Opry.
