Video shows quick-thinking students stopping school bus after driver passes out
HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX/Gray News) — New video from inside a school bus shows the moment five middle school students stepped up after their driver passed out at the wheel.
The video shows driver Leah Taylor passing out while operating the bus last week. Students quickly realized something was wrong and worked together to bring everyone to safety.
One student grabbed the steering wheel while another hit the brakes. A third student called 911, and another notified the school district. A fifth student gave Taylor the medicine Taylor had been holding.
Taylor said she is feeling much better and is thankful to the students for saving her life.
Dr. Melissa Saucier, Hancock Middle School principal, said the students handled the emergency correctly.
“I’m not surprised to hear that our kids remained calm and acted swiftly. This emergency situation could have definitely been detrimental. And they handled it exactly how they should have. And we’re extremely proud of them,” Saucier said.
The students, McKenzy Finch, Jackson Casnave, Darrius Clark, Kayleigh Clark and Destiny Cornelius, were recognized for their actions at a school pep rally.
