UPDATE: Martin police respond to shots fired at UT Martin campus

UPDATE (11/17/23): PRESS RELEASE FROM ASST. CHIEF PHILLIP FUQUA, MARTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Last night at approximately 8:28 pm, Officers from UTM Dept. of Public Safety and
the Martin Police Department responded to 201 Hannings Ln. at University Village
Phase 1 Building B in reference to shots having been fired outside of the building.
Officers located several spent shell casings from a handgun in the stairwell on the
third floor. The building was cleared by officers and UTM issued a shelter-in-place
warning in regards to the campus. No injuries were reported and the investigation
continues. UTM lifted the shelter-in-place warning at approximately 1:00am this
morning. Both agencies are working diligently in unison to identify those

MARTIN, Tenn. — A local university is under lockdown after shots are fired on campus.

A message was sent out by the University of Tennessee at Martin around 8:30 Wednesday evening, stating that UT Martin’s Police, along with the Martin Police Department, were investigating a report of shots being fired around University Village or Cooper Hall  and for students to shelter in place.

According to UT Martin’s Public Safety, the incident stemmed from an altercation between two black males, one wearing a gray hoodie and the other wearing a white hoodie.

The incident reportedly happened on the UT Martin campus, near the Bowling University Center between the Phase 2 dorms and Cooper Hall.

University safety officials say this is not an active shooter situation and no injuries have been reported. At last check, the search was ongoing with those responsible.
