Tips to be prepared for winter weather
JACKSON, Tenn. – Temperatures are expected to drop drastically in the next few days with the possibility of snow early next week.
We want to make sure you are prepared, and most importantly, safe as the winter weather moves across West Tennessee.
It is not recommended to travel during these times, but if so, make sure to prepare your vehicle before you go anywhere.
First, have a full tank of gas or a full charge on electric vehicles.
Make sure that headlights, brake lights, and hazards work properly in case of an accident and to prevent one from occurring.
You can quickly go through a lot of windshield wiper fluid in a single snowstorm. Make sure your vehicle has high-quality “winter” fluid with de-icer before winter weather hits.
Other ways to prepare are to stock your vehicle with a snow brush and ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, cell phone charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine.
And what about the items you should have on hand at home in case of severe weather?
Bottled water is a must. Also, non-perishable foods and items that do not require refrigeration or heat to prepare.
“I buy milk, bread, frozen hamburgers that I buy in a box. And if I had to, I can throw them on the grill in case the electricity goes out,” said Loretta Dawson, a shopper.
The Jackson Energy Authority reminds residents to do the following: Make sure vents are closed, disconnect hoses, use insulated covers to wrap exterior faucets, and let indoor faucets slowly drip to avoid freezing pipes.
And remember winter weather can be particularly difficult on our pets. The Animal Services of Jackson reminds us that domesticated animals are not designed to survive in these conditions.
They ask to bring animals inside if possible and to make sure they have wind and waterproof shelters if not.
They also offer free straw to anyone in Madison County.
