BOLIVAR, Tenn. — Camp Bolivar, an initiative hoping to help broaden the importance of government, is working with the youth of the community.

The Mayor Julian McTizic of Bolivar hopes to lead by example by giving youth in the community an opportunity to expand their knowledge on how government works.

“About four years ago Mayor McTizic said he wanted to start a camp. Basically, to tell middle school age students how government worked and to present that in them in their own hometown and their environment. To show them things that maybe they’re not necessarily learning in school about their own hometown,” said Sarah Rice, social media manager for the City of Bolivar.

Mayor McTizic tells us he’s preparing leaders for the future.

“I know I’m excited for them to have the opportunity to experience things in their hometown that them probably don’t know that happens and learning about how government works and the difference between a city and a county and how local businesses provide for our community. For them to come out and see that stuff and to have fun while doing it I think it’s a great experience for them,” said Mayor McTizic.

They make visits with the fire station and their local radio station and it’s safe to say the helicopter landing was the best part of their experience.

“I’ve never seen a helicopter. Like I have seen it the the sky and stuff, but I’ve never seen it, like, land before,” said Charles Tanks, camp participant.

The students agree that if you can learn and have fun, it’s a recipe for success.

This camp caters to the middle school students in the Bolivar area and this makes it their 4th year offering this experience to the youth.
